‘A Table for the Nation’ is moving to Blackburn Cathedral

Blackburn Cathedral, one of England’s newest cathedrals

We are delighted to announce that the next residency of the Fenland Black Oak Table will be at Blackburn Cathedral. The table will be on display for a year from 21st April 2026 to April 2027.

The table has proved remarkable in the way it holds the attention of visitors, even when placed within cathedrals that possess their own awe-inspiring visual presence. Previous residencies have all been within famously ancient spaces, and the creative team behind the Fenland Black Oak Project are very excited to see how the table sits within the celebrated contemporary aesthetic of Blackburn Cathedral.

Blackburn Cathedral is one of England’s newest cathedrals and is home to a number of extraordinary works of modern art. It is therefore a great privilege that the nation’s table will become part of this remarkable collection for the duration of its year-long residency.

We are also very pleased that the Fenland Black Oak Table will form part of the celebrations for Blackburn Cathedral’s centenary year. The events team at the Cathedral are already planning a wide range of exciting activities and gatherings centred on the table.

The table can be displayed and used in many locations throughout the Cathedral, including the Nave, the North and South Nave aisles, the Crossing and the North Transept. The clergy are also exploring creative ways in which the table may be incorporated into acts of worship.

“We are delighted that the nation’s table will now travel further north and hope that the local community will embrace the opportunity to gather around it and take part in the many events and activities planned during its time at Blackburn Cathedral.”
