‘A Table for the Nation’ is moving to Blackburn Cathedral

Blackburn Cathedral, one of England’s newest cathedrals

We are delighted to announce that the next residency of the Fenland Black Oak Table will be at Blackburn Cathedral. The table will be on display for a year from 21st April 2026 to April 2027.

The table has proved remarkable in the way it holds the attention of visitors, even when placed within cathedrals that possess their own awe-inspiring visual presence. Previous residencies have all been within famously ancient spaces, and the creative team behind the Fenland Black Oak Project are very excited to see how the table sits within the celebrated contemporary aesthetic of Blackburn Cathedral.

Blackburn Cathedral is one of Englands newest Cathedrals and is home to a number of extraordinary pieces of modern art and it is our great privilege that the nations table is able to be a part of that collection for a year.

We are all very pleased that the Fenland Black Oak Table can participate, as just one element, in the celebrations of Blackburn Cathedrals centenary year with a 12 month residency. We know the events team at Blackburn Cathedral have many exciting and diverse activities and events planned on and around the table.

The table is able to be displayed and used in many spaces all over the Cathedral including the Nave, the North and South Nave aisles, the crossing and the North Transept and we know that the Clergy are intending to find creative ways of involving the table in worship.

We are all delighted the nations table can now travel further North and hope the local community embrace this opportunity by getting involved in all the activities and events planned for its use at Blackburn Cathedral.

“Blackburn Cathedral is deeply honoured to be the home to the Fenland Black Oak Table in the coming months. This magnificent work of exceptional skill and artistry is genuinely without equal.”

The Revd. Canon Andrew Horsfall,
Interim Dean of Blackburn
